Our History

Little St Margaret’s Kindergarten has a rich and proud history that spans more than nine decades. Established in 1929 as the kindergarten of St Margaret’s School—now located in Berwick—our roots are deeply embedded in a legacy of educational excellence and community spirit. The kindergarten first operated from the Toorak Presbyterian Church Manse before relocating to a charming bluestone building at 19 Mayfield Avenue, Malvern.

In 1940, when St Margaret’s School transitioned fully to its Berwick campus, two dedicated educators—Miss Margaret Paton and Miss Maisie Cooper—formed a partnership to continue the kindergarten’s operations independently. Their passion and leadership saw Little St Margaret’s flourish for the next thirty years.

Eventually, the kindergarten moved to its current home at 29 Mayfield Avenue, Malvern, where it continues to thrive. Upon Miss Paton and Miss Cooper’s retirement in 1970, a pivotal meeting with local families and supporters determined the future of the kindergarten. It was unanimously agreed that the kinder should continue, and a parent-led council was formed—a community governance model that still guides us today.

In 2014, we joyfully celebrated our 85th anniversary, welcoming back former students and families whose educational journeys began within our walls. This deep sense of connection remains a hallmark of Little St Margaret’s. Many of our current children are second- or even third-generation attendees, with grandparents, great-aunts and uncles, parents, and extended family members having once played, learned, and grown here. Our story is one of continuity, care, and a deep commitment to nurturing young learners within a strong and supportive community.
